The US media are guessing: How serious was Ms. Merkel with her new definition of the German-American Partnership. Well, usually the lady thinks before she speaks – so we may assume she was dead serious.

And it´s you, dear Americans, who have made someone President who promised to „Make America Great Again“ and who made it pretty clear that he would focus on US interests only. Thanks a bunch.

Every step on the recent journey delivered proof that Trump is not negotiating, but demanding. Every step has shown that he does not value partnerships – only paying lip service – and most of the time not even that.

Remember the embarrassment around the , more or less just fictional, „weapons of mass destruction“? Our then chancellor Schroeder did not blindly follow the American call to arms into Afghanistan etc. – and the partnership still survived. Today we get called on the carpet for selling too many cars – while the production sites in cities like Spartanburg, churning out said cars go largely ignored. Today our interests and rules within Europe are simply ignored. As if the US economic power is in itself not enough to win most of the arguments anyway.

Vitally important messages like „Yes, we will be there for our allies within the NATO pact – but we would also like to see you carry more of the burden“ would go a long way. By casually ignoring the partners on the other side of the table – you have given in to Russia, who just love to see the NATO powers divided like that. Really?

But the absolut worst?

Your orange embarrassment of a President actually ignores all laws of physics and declares climate change a hoax. That´s about as smart as declaring „Gravity is a myth“ and wondering why things break on the floor, when you shove them off the table.

Too bad that the majority around the globe still believes in science. The next few years might be our very last chance to achieve the 2° goal. We can not afford to let your orange embarrassment of a President overrule climate actions on a global basis. So it is in the vital interest of humanity that the rest of the world rallies together to forge new alliances in this era. You were afraid of a new world order – China could take over etc. Well, what we can we say? You just gave us ample reason to chase that new world order. Just because we still think that it is the most important challenge for the whole of humanity to save this planet. You might want to thank us later.
